Leather Through the Ages
How can the same material be perfect for such a wide variety of time periods?
-
? BC - Skins become haute couture
-
14th Century - Peasants and poorer merchants may not be able to afford the cloth that the rich can, but even a rabbit or a squirrel can provide a pair of comfy gloves or moccasins, and can make an excellent pouch.
-
1837 - The Victorian era marked a turn towards modesty in Britain, and no woman could be without gloves. One of the most popular materials for those gloves, especially for the middle to upper classes, was kid leather. Mechanization also meant that high-end leather became more affordable for the masses.
-
1881 - Across the pond, Wyatt Earp and his brothers win a gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, AZ. Cloth just wouldn't do for a holster. Leather is the only choice when you have to get to your gun real quick-like.
-
Now, Then, and Never - Steampunk incorporates the best of what is, was, could have been, and never was in a vast melting pot of possibilities and aesthetics. It then adds brass. Lots and lots of brass. All of that metal needs something strong and very sturdy to support it, and that's where leather steals the show. Did we mention leather is very supportive? You say steel boning, we say leather! (What is Steampunk anyway?)
